Overview

Not that we saw much of "mainland" Tahiti, because we spent the week on Mo´orea which is a beautiful island about half an hour away. The scenery was spectacular - majestic mountains surrounded by lovely white sand beaches and glorious blue waters (complete with sharks and stingrays). We didn’t eat out much because it is pretty pricey so can’t really comment on the food, although what we had definitely showed the French influence. Everyone was friendly so it was all very relaxing in the middle of nowhere.

We arrived in Tahiti last Saturday night, and so didn't really get to see much of Pape'ete, the capital because it was pretty much closed on Sunday.

So on Monday, we decided to go on an adventure and see a bit more of "mainland" Tahiti, before heading over to the islands for some sun - there aren't really any beaches to speak of in Tahiti itself, least not ones we could afford anyway. We got on a bus down to the west coast, and missed our stop twice, so found ourselves back in Pape'ete about two hours after we left.

At that point we decided to catch a ferry to Mo'orea as we couldn't afford Bora Bora and we just kinda stayed.

It's so lovely - we're staying ON the beach, and the sand is softer and whiter than most, and this is seriously the clearest bluest water I’ve ever seen.

One day we went out on a shark feed. They were only little black tip sharks, but I was a little nervous when we GOT IN WITH THEM, especially when one came straight at me. Then we had to get in with stingrays. They weren't quite so scary and we could stroke and feed them. All in all a very, very cool day.

Another day ee rented a car and drove round the island - not that it takes - and went to see the mountains in the interior and some of the old sacrificial temple ruins. It's all pretty impressive.

However we've mainly just been lazing on the beach and reading because apart from our two trips out, there's not really a whole lot else to do here and that suits us just fine.
